The BSO celebrates BLACK HISTORY MONTH

It happened after the passing of the Civil Rights Act in the United States Congress, the creation of the television series ROOTS.

It made LaVar Burton a superstar, and writer Alex Haley a game changer. (1977)

40 years later (2018) the black experience awakens the conscience of America with BLACK PANTHER the movie, writing Chadwick Boseman indelibly in our cerebral cortex. WACANDA FOREVER, made with folding arms across the chest to form an “X”, pushes the mind back to the 1968 Olympics when Tommy Smith and John Carlos raised their black fists on high, symbolizing “black power”!

To date, Black Panther has generated 843 million dollars at the box office. Someone came up with the idea of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra playing the music of the film while watching the movie on a jumbo screen. Would there be enough interest for patrons to get dressed and succumb to such an experience?

“You bet!” For 2 days the Meyerhoff auditorium was packed, with cheers at intermission and the conclusion.

Some Baltimoreans came dressed as though they were visiting residents from Wakanda.
