In 1976, at the height of the disco era, a group named WILD CHERRY, produce a an unusual hit song, “Play that Funky Music White Boy”.

Never heard of them again.

In 1976, I met a particular white boy, who was my colleague, at an insurance company, in Towson Maryland. He sold insurance by day, and played music by night. He transitioned his musical popularity to the insurance business, very successfully.

It is going on 41 years since I met that white boy, and when I did, low and behold, he was still playing that funky music, and his playground is still Towson; His name is John Sankonis, and not only is he a drummer for the Admirals of Maryland, but, this night, (May 27, 2017) played back up drummer for Sonny Turner, former lead singer for the famous Platters. I talked to John, who is now a member of Maryland Entertainment Hall of Fame.
